Plot

In the heart of Glendale, California, 1931, we meet Mildred Pierce, a vivacious young mother blessed with a knack for baking. She finds herself thrust into the life of a "grass widow" after ousting her husband, Bert, from their home. Left to fend for herself and her two tender daughters, the 11-year-old Veda and the seven-year-old Ray, Mildred embarks on a grueling job hunt. Her quest takes her to an employment agency, where she is met with job prospects that she considers beneath her dignity. During this tumultuous period, she finds solace and companionship in her friend and neighbor, Lucy Gessler, whose dating advice adds a touch of warmth to her life. A surprising turn of events leads her into the arms of Wally Burgan, her husband's former business associate, ushering in an unforeseen romantic chapter. A ray of hope surfaces when the employment agency rings her about a housekeeping opportunity for a well-heeled socialite. Though hesitant, Mildred resolves to meet her potential employer, only to cut short the sharp-tongued interview. Seeking solace, she retreats to Cristofor's Café, a local diner, where an encounter with a waitress named Ida sets the stage for a dramatic twist in her life story. In this journey, fate and resilience become the cornerstones of Mildred's life, shaping a future she could never have imagined.
