Chinese Paladin (2005)

In the ancient kingdom of Nan Zhao, sinister moon-cult leader Elvis Tsui manipulates the King (Chi-Yin Wong) into condemning his queen (Sun Li) - a descendent of the goddess Nui Wa - to death, under the false claim of her being a demoness. As a deadly water demon is unleashed upon the kingdom, the queen sacrifices herself to protect her people. Entrusting her daughter and nanny to the care of Jiu Zui Xian (Tse Kwan Ho) and a masked stranger, the queen's story fades, only to re-emerge a decade later. Our hero, the impish orphan Li Xiao Yao (Ge Hu), lives a simple life with his ailing aunt, until two mysterious men set him on a quest for a magical antidote. He encounters Zhao Ling'er (Yifei Liu), the lost princess of Nan Zhao, and her nanny (Pei-Pei Cheng) in a mystical land. Xiao Yao finds himself inexplicably recognized as their savior and soon falls in love with Ling'er, promising her a future together. But as he departs for his aunt, a treacherous attack wipes his memories and leaves Ling'er and her injured nanny in danger. As Xiao Yao's past eludes him, he crosses paths with Ling'er again, now mourning her nanny and on a journey back to Nan Zhao. Despite not remembering her, he pledges to help. Meanwhile, Ling'er's old friend Ah Nu (Esther Liu) has been deceived by the malevolent chief, and joins their journey. Along the way, they meet scholarly Liu Jing Yuan (Bryan Wong) and his fiery cousin, Lin Yue Ru (Ady An), who harbors a grudge against Xiao Yao. Ling'er's life spirals when she grows a snake tail, learns the truth about her lineage, and realizes she's carrying Xiao Yao's child - a secret she chooses to keep. As the group battles spirits and demons on their journey, unspoken feelings surface. Yue Ru finds herself attracted to Xiao Yao, causing heartbreak for her cousin Jing Yuan who has always loved her. Ling'er, focused on her mission to save Nan Zhao, leaves Xiao Yao, and he finds comfort in Yue Ru's steadfast love. Their journey takes a dark turn when Ling'er is captured and locked away by Jian Shen (Guo Liang). As Xiao Yao's memories of Ling'er resurface, he realizes he still loves her, leading to a heart-wrenching sacrifice by Yue Ru. Naming his daughter with Ling'er in honor of Yue Ru, Xiao Yao, alongside Ling'er and their friends, resolves to stand against the evil Bai Yue Chief. Their courage, love, and sacrifice form the heart of this enchanting tale, promising an epic battle against malevolent forces.
