Life for East London midwifes in the 1950s are equal parts frustrating and elating. London's women got a taste of independence when World War II gave them the chance to enter the labor market, but a feminist revolution looms on the horizon. But as discontent simmers in the streets, 22 year old Jenny has just left home to begin her career as a midwife. Along with her fellow young midwifes, Jenny develops friendships and builds romances all while helping mothers bring their children to term. Operating out of the city's East End slums, she gets a firsthand look at inequity and injustice.
