In the heart of rural Africa, a spirited 19-year-old girl, christened Zimbabwe by her fervently patriotic father, is left orphaned and destitute. Her family, ravaged by the relentless grip of AIDS, leaves her alone in a community unable to shoulder her care. Hunger gnawing at her and options dwindling, Zimbabwe embarks on a grueling journey from her village, guided by the faint hope of finding a distant aunt in the secluded border town of Beitbridge. Fate pushes her into the shadowy world of human smuggling, thrusting her across the border into South Africa without legal status. Here, she manages to eke out an existence as a domestic worker, but the newfound life is far from idyllic. She endures the torment of a brutal employer, a dire situation that inevitably erupts into violence as Zimbabwe fights to protect herself. Fleeing from her harsh reality, she surrenders to the authorities, seeking refuge in their custody. However, this act of desperation leads to her repatriation back to Zimbabwe, a homecoming marred by the shocking revelation that her brother, unbeknownst to her, has gambled with fate and crossed the border in a perilous quest to find her. "Zimbabwe" is a stirring tale of a young girl's resilience and survival in the face of adversity, a journey that traverses borders and tests the human spirit.
