Youth Without Youth (2007)

On the cusp of Christmas Eve in 1937, nestled within the heart of Piatra Neamt, Romania, we find Dominic Matei, a septuagenarian professor trapped in a torrent of melancholy. His heart, once warmed by the love of his life, now beats cold in her absence, while the unfinished symphony of his life's work - a study on the origins of language - haunts his every waking moment. As Easter Sunday dawns on April 24th, 1938, a despairing Dominic boards a train to Bucharest, intending to snuff out the flickering flame of his existence. However, destiny has a different script. A bolt of lightning seizes him, setting in motion a miraculous metamorphosis. Dominic not only regains his youth but also is blessed with extraordinary abilities. But as the tides of Dominic's life turn, so too does the world. The ominous shadow of WWII descends, with Romania's dictator Ion Antonescu pledging allegiance to Hitler. Hunted by Nazi scientists for his new-found powers, Dominic's only refuge lies in Switzerland. Years skip by like pebbles over a serene lake until Dominic crosses paths with a woman who has braved her own lightning storm. In her, Dominic discovers a second chance at love and the missing puzzle piece to his academic pursuit. Francis Ford Coppola's rendition of Mircea Eliade's surreal novella, "Youth Without Youth," is a cinematic odyssey traversing the borders of space, time, and identity. Where dreams and reality dance in an indistinguishable ballet, and life, much like a dream, leaves you questioning the fabric of existence.
