Plot

In the poignant adaptation of Margaret Edson's play, 'Wit', we meet the indomitable Vivian Bearing (Dame Emma Thompson), a fiercely intellectual English professor renowned for her deep understanding of seventeenth-century British poet John Donne's works. Her life, which has been marked by an unyielding dedication to exploring themes of religion and mortality in literature, is suddenly mirrored in her reality when she is diagnosed with terminal ovarian cancer. The stoic scholar embarks on a taxing journey, consenting to a radical and experimental form of chemotherapy. Administered by the driven Dr. Harvey Kelekian (Christopher Lloyd) and his earnest assistant, Dr. Jason Posner (Jonathan M. Woodward), who once sat in her classes, the treatment forces her to confront her mortality with a new, raw immediacy. As Vivian navigates the tumultuous waves of her diagnosis and treatment, she finds herself reflecting on significant events in her life and her responses to her advancing illness. She is observed by an ensemble of characters: Posner, whose faith lies solely in his medical prowess; the compassionate nurse Susie Monahan (Audrey McDonald), whose humanity shines like a beacon in the sterile hospital environment; and Kelekian, who is relentless in his pursuit of medical breakthroughs, regardless of the human cost. 'Wit' is a compelling exploration of life, literature, and the human spirit's resilience in the face of the ultimate adversary - death itself. It is an intimate portrait of a woman who has spent her life dissecting death in the abstract, now grappling with the very real prospect of her own mortality.
