In the grim abyss of the Great Depression, the currents of despair pull two high school sophomores, Tom and Ed, into a tumultuous journey. With parents battered by unemployment and the shadow of poverty looming large, the boys choose to shoulder the weight of responsibility, hopping freight trains in search of elusive work. Their journey, however, is far from solitary. Every stop they make, every town they pass, teems with children just like them - young souls tossed into the wild world, too early. Among these wandering spirits, they find Sally, a tenacious companion, and together they form an unbreakable bond. The trio finds themselves camping in the fringes of society, in makeshift homes like 'Sewer City', living off the meager scraps of life until the stern hand of local authorities forces them to move on. Their path zigzags across the breath of the mid-west, tracing the lines of hope and desperation, the constant companions of their journey. As they finally reach the pulsating heart of New York, Ed dares to hope that they may find work, that they might finally break free from the shackles of their nomadic existence.
