Plot

Emerging from the cold confines of prison after an eight-year stint, Bill Hayward finds his world dramatically altered. His sons, 11-year-old Jimmy and 15-year-old Dean, have been left to fend for themselves, abandoned by their mother and navigating a world far too mature for their young years. Bill, hardened and detached, is keen to leave his past behind and start afresh. Dean, however, is resilient, working tirelessly not just for survival, but also to play the father figure for his younger brother. The unexpected arrival of Bill casts a spotlight on them, drawing the unwanted attention of social services. To avert the threat of being carted off into care, Dean coerces his neglectful father to stay, using his knowledge of Bill's illicit dealings as leverage. Cornered, Bill grudgingly agrees to play the part of a responsible parent, hoping to deceive the watchful eyes of social services. In his attempt to feign maturity, he forms an unexpected bond with his younger son, Jimmy. This connection offers Bill a glimpse into what he's missed out on - a family, a sense of belonging, the joys and responsibilities of fatherhood. However, this blissful bubble of familial happiness bursts when Jimmy entangles himself with Bill's perilous past associates. In a dilemma, Bill must make a choice. Resolving Jimmy's predicament could mean violating his parole terms and facing a return to prison. Now, his next actions will determine the kind of father he chooses to be - a reliable one tethered by love, or a free one bound by fear.
