Plot

Set on the quaint island of Wilby, tucked away in the Canadian Maritimes, Wilby Wonderful (2004) weaves together the stories of an intriguing assortment of townsfolk. This tight-knit community is a complex tapestry of islanders, those born and bred on Wilby, and non-islanders, the newcomers trying to find their place. Among the townspeople, we meet Sandra Anderson, a single mother and an islander who has recently returned to Wilby. Once known as the town's notorious wild child, Sandra is still struggling to shed her reputation while raising her teenage daughter, Emily. Emily, in turn, is determined not to follow in her mother's footsteps, but finds herself distracted by the charms of her new boyfriend. Elsewhere, the town's local police officer, Buddy French, is wrestling with unresolved marital issues with his non-islander wife, Carol. Carol, the town's realtor, is a control-freak teetering on the edge of a breakdown. Their lives intertwine with the town's Mayor, Brent Fisher, who is clandestinely preparing for a life after politics; Duck McDonald, the dyslexic town handyman who serves as the town's philosophical guide; and the recently separated non-islander, Dan Jarvis, who is contemplating ending his life at the island's popular seaside spot, "The Watch." As these characters cross paths, they all share a common thread, beautifully articulated by Duck to young Emily while discussing her mother: "She wants to love and be loved, just like all of us." Wilby Wonderful is a poignant exploration of love, identity, and the search for connection in a small town.
