Wife (1953)

In the bustling heart of Tokyo, the decade-long union of Mihoko and Toichi Nakagawa teeters on the brink of disintegration, weighed down by the inertia of unspoken discontent. Their shared unhappiness is a silent specter, haunting their every interaction. Yet, they keep their struggles hidden, especially from the eyes of their three boarders, the veneer of normality becoming their shared pretense. Mihiko, bound by her traditional views, sees no escape in divorce, the social stigma of which she deems unbearable. In their silent suffering, they remain blind to the echoes of their own predicament in the lives around them, unaware of their roles in their self-crafted purgatory of discontent. The precarious balance of their marriage is further threatened when Toichi finds himself drawn to his charming co-worker, the widowed Fusako Sagara, who reciprocates his feelings, adding another complex layer to the Nakagawa's troubled marital tapestry.
