In the underbelly of Chicago, notorious hitman Critical Jim (Tim Allen) has cornered his latest quarry, a man named Cletis Tout in the hustle and bustle of New York. However, the kill is delayed as the target claims he is not the real Cletis Tout. A cinematic aficionado, Jim has a peculiar fondness for compelling narratives, often finding them more satisfying than the completion of his lethal contracts. Intrigued, Jim offers his captive a chance to save his own life - by 'pitching' him a convincing tale. The man, introducing himself as Trevor Allen Finch (Christian Slater), spins a tale of a lifetime of white-collar crime and a recent daring escape from prison, all in the pursuit of a long-hidden diamond stash. He explains how he assumed the identity of Cletis Tout to evade the long arm of the law, a ruse which has sadly led him into his current predicament with Jim. However, the quest for the diamonds isn't a straightforward one. Unforeseen complications arise, including the unexpected entrance of a young woman, Tess Tobias (Portia de Rossi), into his life. Despite the chaos, Finch realises that Tess might be the missing piece in his life, the one he was destined to be with. As Finch's story unfolds, Jim finds himself drawn into the narrative, not just as a listener but as an active participant. He yearns to witness a classic Hollywood ending, even if it means penning the final scene himself and ensuring its enactment.
