Plot

In the heartland of America, our young and uneducated heroine, Novalee Nation (Natalie Portman) - a seventeen-year-old trailer park dweller with a baby on the way - embarks on a life-altering journey. Pregnant and superstitious, she sets off from Tennessee with her neglectful boyfriend, Willie Jack Pickens (Dylan Bruno), in hopes of a new life in California. However, destiny has other plans as she is abandoned with just $5.55 to her name in the quaint town of Sequoyah, Oklahoma. Alone and penniless, Novalee seeks refuge in the most unlikeliest of places - a local Walmart. As she makes a covert home amongst the shelves, she unwittingly becomes the heart of an unlikely community. A motley crew of Sequoyah's residents rally around her, each grappling with their own struggles. She forms bonds with the likes of Sister Husband (Stockard Channing), a kind-hearted recovering alcoholic, the vivacious single mother Lexi Coop (Ashley Judd) who amusingly names her children after snack foods, the insightful Walmart photographer Moses Whitecotten (Keith David), and the intellectually gifted, but socially awkward librarian Forney Hull (James Frain). While Novalee's unexpected journey into motherhood unfolds within the Walmart walls, the arrival of her daughter Americus (Mackenzie Fitzgerald) marks a new chapter. As she navigates the complexities of life and love, she draws strength from her makeshift family, and in turn, brings a sense of purpose and belonging to their lives. Forney's unspoken love for Novalee adds a layer of poignant complexity as she wrestles with her feelings for him, guided by an unexpected ally. "Where the Heart Is" is a compelling tapestry of love, resilience, and the power of community, spun together in the aisles of a Walmart. Based on the best-selling novel by Billie Letts, this is a story of a young woman abandoned in a strange town, who turns a dire predicament into a testament of the human spirit's ability to find home wherever the heart is.
