Plot

Stewart McBain (Coleman), a titan in the realm of real estate, has an unfettered passion for detonating aged structures to make way for modern architectural marvels. His latest project, a burgeoning subdivision, faces unexpected resistance when a band of protestors rally against the demolition of the unsightly yet historically significant Dutch House. As fate would have it, McBain's public image takes a nosedive when his ill-timed appearance on television triggers a media frenzy. His children - the headstrong Daphne (Thurman), contemplative Chloe (Amis), and quirky Jimmy (Hewlett) - don't spare him their biting ridicule. In an act of tough love, McBain responds by leaving them at the Dutch House with a mere $750 each, severing their silver spoon-fed lifestyle, and thrusting them into a world where survival is earned, not given. From a distance, McBain and his equally apprehensive wife, Jean, watch as their progeny navigate this unfamiliar territory, encountering new faces, forming unexpected alliances, and transforming the maligned Dutch House into a unique haven, even opening their doors to a ragged wanderer.
