Plot

In the heart of the Australian outback, where the desert is speckled with countless anthills, geologist Lance Hackett embarks on a mission for a mining company, charting the subsoil in anticipation of a potential uranium extraction. However, his work comes to a halt when he encounters a group of aborigines who insist this is the sacred ground where the green ants dream, warning that to disturb their dreaming is to invite the end of humanity. Upon learning of the aboriginal claims, the mining company offers a multitude of "solutions", from generous financial compensation to a share of the expected revenue. But the aborigines' wish is simple: they desire a military aeroplane they've seen on a city trip. In a gesture of goodwill, the company fulfills their wish, securing an aeroplane and constructing a runway in the desert for its arrival. Yet despite these efforts, negotiations regarding the land reach a stalemate and the dispute escalates to the Commonwealth court. The court hears from various parties and experts, including an aboriginal who is the last survivor of his tribe and whose language no one can comprehend. The tension reaches a climax when two aborigines take off in the plane despite the low fuel. Though the mining company emerges victorious in the legal battle, the moral victory undeniably belongs to the aborigines. The tale concludes with a surreal touch, as aborigines from the mountains narrate a tale of a colossal winged ant that fell from the sky, further deepening the enigma of where the green ants dream.
