Plot

In the heart of Maine's political battlefield, Ben Grandy serves as the campaign manager and chief speechwriter for Governor Conrad Welling, who also happens to be his future father-in-law. With the Governor's daughter, Maggie Welling, accepting his proposal, their wedding is set to grace the lush landscape of the Governor's lakeside mansion. The responsibility of orchestrating the grand affair falls on Ben's brother, Shel Grandy, an aspiring wedding planner with a strained relationship with Ben since his coming out as gay. The wedding preparations flow seamlessly until the Governor delivers a speech penned by Ben, which unintentionally positions him as against gay marriage. This political move, although contradicted by the Governor's usual stance on gay rights, infuriates Shel, who impulsively goes on a one-man strike as the wedding planner. His protest, though small and largely unnoticed, sparks a question that humorously yet poignantly explores the issue of gay marriage: What if all the gay people in America went on strike? As the media puts a twist on Shel's protest, alliances shift and relationships are tested. Maggie sides with Shel's fight for equality against her father and fiancé, while Shel's boyfriend, Ted Moore, a state attorney, wrestles with the concept of marriage, something he had never considered before. Amid the escalating tensions and the threat of a nationwide strike, the heart of the dispute ultimately narrows down to the two brothers. They must navigate their complex feelings towards each other and confront their understanding of sexual orientation as it pertains to them. "Wedding Wars" is a vibrant comedy that cleverly intertwines the seriousness of gay rights and equal treatment under the law with a sibling rivalry, a looming wedding, and the absurdity of a potential national shutdown. It's an outrageous journey into the heart of what it means to be a brother, a citizen, and a champion of one's own rights.
