Plot

In the wake of post-war London, the tale of We Think the World of You (1988) unravels, painting a poignant picture of human relationships and the ties that bind. The story follows Johnny (Gary Oldman), a young, aimless, and married bisexual man, whose life takes a detour when he's sentenced to prison. Johnny entrusts his adored Alsatian, Evie, to the unwilling guardianship of his oppressed parents and his older, middle-class former lover and lifelong friend, Frank (Sir Alan Bates). As Frank frequents Johnny's family home, he forms an unexpected and deep connection with Evie. The dog's playful spirit and unbreakable loyalty echo Johnny's essence, stirring a sense of camaraderie within Frank. However, an undercurrent of tension emerges as it becomes clear that Johnny's father is mistreating the spirited Alsatian, leaving her neglected in a confined yard for days. This ignites a class war over Evie's wellbeing, which is further inflamed by Johnny's manipulative and confrontational wife, Megan (Frances Barber). Megan's primary goal is to reclaim her husband from Frank upon his release, setting the stage for a complicated and enthralling set of tragi-comic relationships. In this intricate web of human relations, Evie becomes a symbolic embodiment of the control they exert over each other. Upon his release, Johnny is confronted with familial strife and the heart-wrenching prospect of surrendering Evie to Frank. The narrative explores the characters' propensity to sabotage their own happiness and that of others due to their fear of freedom and their inability to realize their dreams. 'We Think the World of You' is a captivating exploration of love, loyalty, and the human capacity for self-destruction amidst the quest for control.
