We, the Dead (2017)

In the shadowy borderlands of Thailand and Malaysia, we meet Hui Ling, a woman fuelled by the dream of a brighter future in Taiwan. Yet her life is currently tethered to the grittier reality of assorted jobs and penny pinching. When her meager savings evaporate, she finds herself lured into the murky underworld of human trafficking by her employer's tempting proposition. As Hui Ling embarks on this dangerous path, she becomes an involuntary witness to the horrifying plight of the Rohingya migrants, victims of her newfound trade. Amid this moral quagmire, a beacon of hope emerges in the form of Wei, a hospital worker who is convinced that Hui Ling is a ghost from his past. AQÉRAT paints an arresting portrait of the struggles of displacement and the blurred lines of morality against the gritty backdrop of contemporary Malaysia.
