Plot
In the heart of the eastern German city of Rostock, an unforgettable event known as "The Night of the Fire" unfolds on the 24th of August, 1992. A seething mob ignites the city, cheered on by a crowd of over 3,000 spectators. Their fury is directed towards a single building, home to over 120 Vietnamese individuals, each one seeking a peaceful existence in a newly reunited Germany. This harrowing night crystallizes into a haunting symbol of xenophobia, as the film "We Are Young. We Are Strong" unveils the story through the eyes of three disparate souls.
Lien, a Vietnamese woman, fights for survival amidst the chaos. She grapples with the burning question: Can a place that's now turned against her ever truly be considered home?
Stefan, a youth tangled in the web of violence, finds solace in the adrenaline-fueled riots that light up the night. Daytime boredom gives way to nightly skirmishes with law enforcement and foreigners. Struggling to come to terms with the untimely loss of a friend, Stefan spirals further into the vortex of brutality.
Martin, Stefan's father, is a local politician torn between the pursuit of his ambition and the call of his ideals. As the city burns around him, he is forced to confront his responsibility - not only as a public figure but also as a father.
"We Are Young. We Are Strong" paints a vivid portrait of a city on the brink, a night of terror, and the characters caught in the crossfire of societal unrest.
