Plot

In the heart of Sub-Saharan Africa, the tranquil life of twelve-year-old Komona is abruptly shattered by the brutal invasion of her village by the Great Tiger Rebels. Swept up in a maelstrom of violence and coercion, Komona is compelled to wield a weapon against her own parents, an act that secures her place within the rebels' ranks. It's a measure of survival in a world where compliance is her only reprieve from a gruesome death. Her ability to survive a deadly skirmish with government soldiers, where none from her village do, spins a myth around Komona. She becomes the 'War Witch,' perceived to possess mystical powers that reveal hidden enemies. This reputation elevates her within the rebel hierarchy, drawing the gaze of the Great Tiger himself. Amid the horrors of her existence, she finds solace in hallucinogens that paint her world with spectral apparitions, a haunting yet less gory alternative to the real carnage around her. In this tumultuous backdrop, Komona forges a bond with another child soldier known as The Magician. This friendship illuminates a potential path to a life beyond the relentless rebel strife. However, escape is not as simple as it seems. Despite her vaunted status, Komona is ensnared in a web of superstition, brutality, and the ever-looming specter of war. As she attempts to carve out a path to freedom, she must wrestle with both the physical torment of her past and the spiritual consequences that persistently shadow her. In a poignant confession to her unborn child, Komona narrates her harrowing journey, a testament to her resilience and the unyielding human spirit. Yet, the question lingers - can she truly liberate herself from the imposing chains of the past and the phantom title bestowed upon her by the Great Tiger? War Witch is an exploration of this haunting dilemma, a raw and immersive tale of survival, friendship, and the search for freedom in the face of overwhelming odds.
