Plot

In the heart of the Great Karoo, where stripes are synonymous with survival, Khumba, a zebra born with only half his stripes, is an instant outcast among his insular, stripe-obsessed herd. As a cruel drought grips the land, whispers of Khumba being cursed infiltrate the herd, and he's blamed for the lack of rain and even the death of his own mother. With his father, the herd's leader, also turning against him, Khumba realises that his partial stripes have no place in this conformist community. Driven by the need to fit in, Khumba steps out of the herd's confines into the harsh wilderness, a realm ruled by the ruthless leopard, Phango, who guards the waterholes and strikes terror in the hearts of the Karoo's denizens. Khumba's daring escape from societal expectations takes a turn when he's saved by an unlikely pair - Mama V, a free-spirited wildebeest with a disdain for traditional motherhood, and Bradley, a flamboyant ostrich grappling with insecurity beneath his scraggily plumage. When a mystical mantis bestows upon Khumba a cryptic map, hinting at a potential solution to his stripes dilemma or a path to water, his new companions join him on his quest. The trio embarks on a vibrant journey across the Karoo, their path punctuated by a cavalcade of characters: a herd of Springboks seeking a safer home, a bohemian community nestled in an opulent national park, a beat-boxing Riverine Rabbit on the brink of extinction, an oddball flock of Dassies worshipping a Mighty Black Eagle, and Nora, a solitary Merino sheep living in an abandoned farm. As Khumba navigates these encounters, he discovers that survival is intertwined with diversity, and that what sets him apart might be his greatest strength. His journey culminates in a showdown with the malevolent Phango, a trial he must overcome before he can reunite with his herd and prove that life in the Great Karoo isn't just about black and white stripes. In this technicolor tapestry of a tale, Khumba's quest to earn his stripes becomes an adventure that celebrates difference, challenges norms, and redefines strength.
