Plot

In the wake of an overwhelming existence, renowned trauma surgeon Thomas Reiter willingly confines himself within the walls of a mental institution, surrendering to a self-fashioned refuge - a vibrant Western fantasy. His reality becomes a technicolor dreamscape of cowboys and outlaws, where his troubles are resolved in the clarity of this binary world. An earnest priest, dispatched by Thomas's worried parents, embarks on a mission to coax him back to the tangible world. As he steps into Thomas's fascinating realm of escapism, the priest discovers the captivating allure of this alternate reality. "Wanted" (1999) is a whimsically introspective exploration of reality and imagination, and the blurred lines between them. Its narrative delves into one man's struggle with life's complexities and his retreat into a simpler world. Challenging the predictable trope of digital escapism, the film instead employs the symbolism of a Western frontier, representing a world of clear dichotomies - good versus evil. Filmed in a country bereft of any traditional Western infrastructure, "Wanted" daringly attempts to recreate this genre within its narrative, although it's far from being a conventional Western flick. This Western fantasy forms a fraction of the film, serving as an embodiment of a specific desire. The rest remains firmly rooted in reality, painting a portrait of a comedy that might not tickle everyone's funny bone. If one considers "Indien" a comedy, then "Wanted" fits the same mold, shedding light on the subtleties of humor that might not be universally amusing.
