Plot

In the year 1913, Axel Heyst, a solitary figure, finds refuge on a secluded island near the bustling port of Surabaya in the Dutch East Indies. One day, his tranquility is interrupted when personal affairs draw him to the port, leading him to a hotel ruled by Schomberg, a German harboring a deep-seated racial prejudice. The night air at the hotel is thick with the melodious strains of an all-female orchestra, managed by San Giacomo. Among the musicians is Alma, a damsel in distress, being offered on a platter to Schomberg. Desperate for deliverance, she pleads with Heyst to rescue her from the clutches of these villains. Heeding her plea, Heyst whisks Alma away to his isolated island, where they find solace in each other's company, with only the native servant Wang for company. However, their peaceful existence is disrupted when the vengeful Schomberg directs the ominous Mr. Jones and his band of bandits towards the island, luring them with tales of hidden wealth lying in wait. The plot thickens, as the threat of danger looms over the island, threatening to shatter the sanctuary that Heyst and Alma have found in each other. The stage is set for a gripping tale of love, betrayal, and survival.
