Plot

In the twilight of his life, Maurice Russell, once a revered actor, navigates the fading embers of his career in the heart of London. His name, once spoken with awe, now only echoes in the memories of his generation while remaining unknown to the youth of today. Amidst his declining fame, Maurice finds solace in the company of his cherished friends, fellow actor Ian, and Donald, and his estranged wife, Valerie. The spotlight no longer seeks him, and he only returns to the stage when financial necessity beckons. Ian, fearing the looming specter of mortality, invites his young great-niece, Jessie, from the countryside to reside with him. His vision of tranquil companionship and sophisticated cultural exchange swiftly shatters upon her arrival. Jessie, a hard-drinking, ill-mannered, and dismissive girl, rattles Ian's peaceful world with her disruptive presence and lofty dreams. She lacks culinary skills, depletes his liquor, and fails to match the cultured lifestyle he had envisioned. However, Maurice perceives a different spark in Jessie, a latent potential waiting to be ignited. Renaming her 'Venus' after his favorite painting, he sees in her a chance to rekindle his own dwindling vitality and confront his repressed desires. As they spend more time together, they engage in a subtle dance of give-and-take, each seeking to fulfill their own yearnings. Maurice, entranced by Venus, finds himself experiencing a late-life romantic awakening for a girl half a century his junior. Their unconventional bond unravels a series of surprises, challenging their perceptions of companionship and love. It's only when Maurice nears the end of his life's journey that the true nature of their relationship comes to light, leaving them to ponder if what they shared was genuine friendship or something more profound.
