Caught in the crossfire of hitchhiking and spontaneous skinny-dipping on their journey to Los Angeles, sisters Jane and Penny find themselves entangled in the web of a rural town's power dynamics. Arrested and thrust into a prison work program sponsored by Tropp, the local agriculture titan, they are forced to toil in a sea of cotton fields, their dream of freedom replaced by a sentence of sweat and dirt. Tropp, in a cunning move, weds the town's middle-aged widow judge, securing an unending stream of low-cost labor that undercuts his rivals.
