In the heart of British India, young Ameeran endures an impoverished existence alongside her loving family in the rustic town of Faizabad. Her life takes a tragic turn when her father's defiant stand against the local corrupt constable, Dilawar Khan, triggers an act of vengeance. Years later, Khan kidnaps Ameeran and, when the demanded ransom fails to materialize, sells her into the clutches of a brothel in Lucknow run by the formidable Khanum Jaan. In this shadowy world, Ameeran, now rechristened Umrao Jaan, blossoms into a renowned courtesan, enchanting patrons with her mesmerizing dance and soulful poetry. Among the many admirers drawn to her allure, the prominent Nawab Sujat Ali Khan and his son, Sultan, hold a special place. A passionate romance kindles between Sultan and Umrao, much to the displeasure of Sujat. Sultan's love for Umrao overpowers his thirst for inheritance, prompting him to relinquish his father's opulent mansion and relocate to Gadi with his uncle, leaving Umrao behind. As Umrao navigates the labyrinth of her life, a new admirer, Nawab Faiz Ali, emerges, promising to sweep her off to a new life with Khanum's blessings. She soon discovers Faiz's true identity as a bandit, leading to his capture and her release at Sultan's command. However, her heart shatters once again as Sultan, now doubting her loyalty, coldly rejects her, forcing her to return to Lucknow. A glimmer of hope illuminates Umrao's path when she is invited to perform at a wedding ceremony in Faizabad. With her heart brimming with anticipation, she seizes this opportunity, hoping to reclaim her lost identity as Ameeran. As the curtain rises, Umrao finds herself standing on the precipice of her past, face to face with her family.
