Plot

In the world of "True Confession" (1937), the dichotomy of truth and deceit finds a home in the peculiar couple, Helen and Kenneth "Ken" Bartlett. Helen, a fledgling writer with a knack for spinning tales and an unyielding affinity for deception, is starkly contrasted by her husband Ken, a scrupulously honest lawyer whose virtue is the bane of his professional success. Their life takes a dramatic turn when Helen, despite her husband's reservations, covertly accepts a secretarial job with Ken's father's friend, Otto Krayler. Enticed by the promise of a handsome salary for minimal work, Helen soon finds herself ensnared in a web of Krayler's unwanted advances. A frantic escape leaves her belongings behind, leading to a return trip with her best friend Daisy McClure. But they arrive to a shocking scene: Krayler is dead, and Helen is suddenly thrust into the spotlight as the prime suspect. In the ensuing trial, Ken, convinced his wife acted in self-defense, leaps to her defense, navigating a labyrinth of circumstantial evidence, all while wrestling with the suspicion that Helen's pathological lying might be at play. Meanwhile, a peculiar character, Charles "Charley" Jasper, lurks in the shadows of the courtroom, his cryptic comments and unnerving presence adding an additional layer of mystery to the unfolding drama. When Helen is acquitted, their relief is short-lived, as Charley emerges from the shadows with a blackmail scheme, threatening their newfound peace. "True Confession" is a thrilling journey into the heart of deception, truth, and the gray areas in between, where the specter of a murder hangs heavy, and the consequences of our choices return to haunt us.
