Too Many Wives (1937)

In the bustling heart of the city, socialite Betty Jackson and the charming Barry Trent find themselves entwined in a serendipitous encounter at the park while walking their dogs. The spark between them is immediate and undeniable. Barry, with a different dog in tow each day, leads Betty to believe he's a prosperous heir to a dog breeding empire, when in fact, he's a humble dog walker struggling to make ends meet. As an aspiring journalist, he's yet to find a breakthrough in his career, despite his relentless efforts at the Evening Star newspaper. Barry's persistent visits to the newspaper office do not go unnoticed by the editor, Horace Mansfield. Although there are no reporter positions available, Mansfield sees something in Barry and offers him a rather unusual role. Barry becomes the newspaper’s scapegoat, the one who absorbs the wrath of irate subjects of articles. His infectious charm gets him not only out of hot water but also evokes sympathy from those who were once disgruntled. Mansfield spins a web of deceit around Barry, painting him as a married man with a child to stir up further sympathy. Barry's precarious secret life takes an unexpected turn when Betty's father, Winfield Jackson - one of the disgruntled subjects - storms into the newspaper office with his daughter in tow. Betty, shocked to meet the “married” Barry, starts drawing her own conclusions about his life. As Barry attempts to reclaim Betty's heart without revealing his professional secret, a whirlwind of misunderstandings and misconceptions takes over, while others seize the opportunity to reinforce the lie of Barry’s marital status.
