Plot

In the heartrending tale of 'Tonio' (2016), we follow the poignant journey of a family forever marred by tragedy. The world comes to a standstill on 23rd May 2010, as 21-year-old Tonio van der Heijden, portrayed with aching authenticity by Chris Peters, falls prey to a brutal car accident. His critical condition leads him to the chillingly sterile confines of a hospital, where his life tragically slips away. His parents, brought to life by the exquisite performances of Pierre Bokma and Rifka Lodeizen, are forced to witness the unbearable: the death of their only son in the cold grip of intensive care. This catastrophic event catapults them into a world where every corner of their existence is a stark reminder of their lost son. Tonio's absence, a gaping wound in their lives, creates a phantom pain that they carry with them, a sorrow threatening to pull them into a vortex of despair. The film is a poignant adaptation of A.F. Th. van der Heijden's acclaimed novel 'TONIO' (de Bezige Bij), a heartrending chronicle of his own son's untimely death. The novel, a testament to a father's sorrow, earned prestigious accolades including the Libris Prize, the NS Publieksprijs (Public Award), and the P.C. Hooft Award for its author. With over 200,000 copies sold, the book's legacy continues to touch hearts, much like the life of young Tonio whose memory persists beyond his tragic end.
