Plot

In the wake of his service as a US Air Force pilot in the Korean War and WWII, Lloyd Tredman finds himself emotionally scarred, prompting him to seek solace in the vibrant city of Madrid. Leaving his wife, Phyllis, who still harbors feelings for him, he embarks on a life of reckless abandon, squandering his savings on a racehorse and plunging into a feverish whirl of gambling. Tormented by the traumas of war and an inexplicable fear of flying, Lloyd is a changed man, eluding the grasp of responsibility. His life teeters on the precipice of chaos until a mysterious man named Bert Smith offers him a tempting deal - a one-time flight smuggling British currency from Egypt to Madrid. This lucrative opportunity promises to free him from his spiraling debts and push him back into the cockpit, a place he thought he'd left behind forever. Meanwhile, Phyllis, unable to fathom Lloyd's drastic transformation and his desire for divorce, ventures to Madrid. She seeks answers from his circle of friends, including his military comrade Jimmy Heldon, Jimmy's wife Paquita - a UN nurse they met during the war, and Toto del Aro, Lloyd's intriguing housemate. As she navigates this foreign landscape, she realizes that the man she married is buried beneath layers of unresolved trauma. Unbeknownst to Lloyd, his daring smuggling operation turns treacherous as he discovers his cargo isn't just currency but also heroin. With Interpol on his tail and time running out, Lloyd must confront his demons, reassess his relationships, and make decisions that could alter the course of his life forever. In "Tip on a Dead Jockey" (1957), the tumultuous aftershocks of war, the allure of adventure, and the complexities of love intertwine in a thrilling narrative that explores the human capacity for change and redemption.
