Plot
In the captivating narrative of The Young in Heart (1938), the Carletons, a family of cunning card sharps, masterfully adopt the guise of affluent personas to prey on the rich, exploiting their generosity. Thomas Higgins, the patriarch, takes center stage as ex-Bengal Lancer Colonel Anthony 'Sahib' Carleton. His family follows suit, immersing themselves in this intricate deception. However, their scheming tactics provoke the wrath of the local authorities in the French Riviera, resulting in their expulsion.
As fate would have it, on the train bound for London, they cross paths with the endearing, yet lonely, Ellen Fortune. Recently coming into a windfall, Miss Fortune is the perfect mark for the Carletons. In an unexpected turn of events, a train derailment prompts the Carletons to save Miss Fortune's life, leading her to invite them into her home out of gratitude.
Seeing this as a golden opportunity, the Carletons' daughter, George-Anne, envisages a secured future - living a life of honesty under Miss Fortune's roof and, perhaps, inheriting her wealth. However, their anticipated plot to win over the elderly woman's affection and fortune might be disrupted as they find themselves inexplicably touched by her kindness.
