Plot

Set amid the pulsating heart of 1930s Shanghai, a city brimming with political intrigue and cultural crossroads, we meet Sofia Belinskya, a Russian Countess. This remnant of an opulent era laden with grandeur and elaborate dance parties, Sofia now finds herself exiled, her royal status swept away by the Revolution. Stripped of her nobility, she's reduced to a life of hardship, striving to support her daughter Katya and the remnants of her husband's family. Sofia's new world revolves around a dance club, where she earns her keep as a hostess and companion lady. Through a captivating dance and an engaging chat, she entertains a myriad of men, among them, Todd Jackson, an American diplomat. Jackson, a blind man with a heart as kind as his spirit, forges a unique bond with Sofia, their friendship blossoming amidst the club's dimmed lights and whispered secrets. Simultaneously, Jackson finds an ally in Matsuda, a congenial Japanese diplomat frequenting the club. As time ebbs and flows, their friendship deepens, and an ambitious plan takes root. Jackson establishes an illustrious club, "The White Countess," bringing Sofia onboard as a companion lady. Yet Sofia, cautious of the world she's navigating, conceals her true occupation from her daughter, hoping to shield Katya from the path she's been forced to tread. Despite their complex circumstances, an undercurrent of attraction weaves itself between Sofia and Jackson, teetering on the precipice of love. Yet, their potential romance is shadowed by Jackson's past, a traumatic event that haunts him relentlessly. Simultaneously, Sofia yearns for escape, dreaming of a life beyond Shanghai's imposing walls. As their dreams and desires intertwine, the impending Japanese invasion looms large, threatening to shatter their fragile world. "The White Countess" becomes an emblem of their struggle, their hopes, and their shared longing for a future that dangles just out of reach.
