Plot

In the throes of an identity crisis, Paul Groves (Peter Fonda), a seasoned television commercial director, finds his world spiraling out of control when his wife, Sally (Susan Strasberg), walks out on him. Burdened with despair, Paul seeks solace in his enigmatic friend, John (Bruce Dern), a self-proclaimed guru and fervent promoter of LSD. Desperate to find an escape, Paul implores John to guide him on his maiden voyage into the psychedelic realm of acid trips. Their journey begins at a pulsating "freak-out" hosted by Max (Dennis Hopper), an eccentric friend of John's. After an intoxicating night, the duo procures some LSD from Max and retreats to the sanctuary of John's architecturally intriguing split-level hideaway, complete with a pool that blurs the line between indoors and outdoors. As the hallucinogenic journey unfolds, Paul becomes a passenger in a surreal, sensory overload. He is swept up in a whirlwind of visions - sensuous scenes, death's cold embrace, the hypnotic dance of strobe lights, a spectacle of blooming flowers, bewitching dancing girls, menacing witches, shrouded riders, a terrifying torture chamber, and an enigmatic dwarf. Amid his spiraling panic, John's advice echoes in his mind: "go with it, man." But just how far can Paul trust his mystical guide, John?
