The Three Musketeers (1933)

In the vast and merciless expanse of the Arabian Desert, an American aviator, Tom Wayne (John Wayne), and his loyal co-pilot, Stubbs (Noah Beery Jr.), find themselves in the midst of a riveting adventure. From the daring vantage of their airborne craft, they witness the relentless assault of Arab bandits on three lone troopers of the French Foreign Legion. Aided by their mounted machine gun, they swoop down to the rescue, scattering the assailants with a rain of bullets. The rescued trio, Clancy (Jack Mulhall), Renard (Raymond Hatton), and Dutch Schmidt (Francis X. Bushman Jr.), hail themselves as "The Three Musketeers." They reveal to Wayne the existence of "The Devil's Circle," a fanatical cult hell-bent on annihilating the Foreign Legion through gun-running and insurrection, led by the enigmatic, masked figure, El Shaitan, whose true identity remains shrouded in mystery. Wayne, initially an outsider, is drawn into the fray when an old friend, Armand Corday (Lon Chaney Jr.), entrapped in the sinister web of The Devil's Circle, seeks his help. Tragically, Armand falls victim to an assassin before he can divulge what he knows about the cult, and Stubbs too meets a tragic end. In the wake of such loss, Wayne, now embraced as the Musketeers' "D'Artagnan," must not only contend with the accusation of a crime he did not commit, but also unmask the true identity of El Shaitan. Alongside the Three Musketeers and Armand's sister, Elaine (Ruth Hall), Wayne embarks on a perilous mission to dismantle the cult and avenge his fallen friends.
