The Thirteenth Guest (1932)

In the chilling depths of the past lies a curious tale. Marie Morgan, armed with nothing but a flashlight and a key, ventures into a decrepit house, shrouded in darkness and swallowed by decay. The eerie silence is broken by the gnawing of rats, feasting on the remains of a lavish banquet mysteriously laid out years ago for thirteen guests. Within the gloom, Marie finds an anachronism - a newly installed telephone on a cobweb-laden table and electric lights piercing the rotting darkness. Haunted by memories of a dinner party thirteen years prior that left her father lifeless after reading a cryptic will, she takes a seat at the desolate table, in the thirteenth chair - a seat left vacant on that fateful night. Marie's solitary exploration is abruptly shattered by screams that echo through the night, prompting her cab driver to summon the police. However, upon their arrival, they find not a terrified Marie, but her lifeless body at her place at the table. The enigmatic circumstances summon Police Captain Ryan and criminologist Phil Winston to the scene. As the investigation unfolds, the net of suspicion tightens around family lawyer Robert Barksdale and other attendees of the ill-fated dinner. The plot thickens when Marie, presumed dead, mysteriously reappears, revealing that a double had been seated in her stead. As the surviving guests are rounded up at Winston's apartment, it becomes clear that the killer's motive was the attempted theft of a combination in Marie's possession. This combination unlocked a vault containing keys to a safe-deposit box, designating her as the beneficiary of a will made prior to the sinister dinner party. The hunt for the murderer takes a deadly turn as the shadowy predator lures Marie back to the old house. Winston must race against time to save her from the clutches of the killer and unravel the truth behind the macabre banquet of the past.
