Plot

In the shadowy underworld where justice is elusive, a cryptic avenger, known only as Dr. Rx, emerges from the shadows. This vigilante has a penchant for meting out death to criminals who have wriggled free from the grip of the law. Each demise orchestrated by Dr. Rx is marked by a signature calling card, a chilling reminder of his relentless pursuit of justice. Caught in this web of mysterious murders are five men, all previously acquitted of heinous crimes. Their seemingly unrelated paths cross fatally when they fall prey to the enigmatic Dr. Rx. As the death toll mounts and the city is gripped by fear, the police, led by Inspector Hurd and Sergeant Sweeney, turn to private investigator Jerry Church. His reputation for unearthing the truth in a labyrinth of lies makes him their best hope in this baffling case. Jerry is further drawn into the mystery when brilliant attorney Dudley Crispin, who had defended three of the murdered men, seeks his help. Despite securing an acquittal for his latest client, Zarini, Crispin watches in horror as Zarini becomes the latest victim, dropping dead in the courtroom. Amidst the escalating chaos, Jerry finds solace in his love for Kit Logan. Though she implores him to abandon the terrifying case, a chilling threat from Ernie Paul, the prime suspect in Zarini's murder, forces Jerry to persist. The plot takes a macabre turn when Jerry himself is captured by Dr. Rx, who subjects him to a nerve-shredding ordeal. Strapped to an operating table, Jerry is subjected to a hallucinatory nightmare involving a grotesque brain transplant with a gorilla, a ploy by Dr. Rx to drive Jerry into insanity. "The Strange Case of Doctor Rx" is a chilling blend of horror and comedy, spearheaded by Patric Knowles as Jerry Church. The film is peppered with an ensemble cast, including Lionel Atwill, a veteran of macabre classics, and Shemp Howard, lending a touch of humor as the bumbling police sergeant. This 1942 production promises a rollercoaster of suspense, dark humor, and unexpected twists that keep you guessing until the very end.
