Plot

In the heart of the quaint town of Sloughborough, a tale of unexpected inheritance and comedic misadventures unfolds. Jean (Virginia McKenna) and Matt (Bill Travers), a couple scraping by on dreams and Matt's fledgling writing career, are thrown into an unexpected twist of fate when they receive a telegram bearing peculiar news. Matt's enigmatic and long-forgotten uncle has passed away, bequeathing them his most cherished possession - a charming yet dilapidated cinema in this quiet town. Without a second thought, Jean and Matt pack their meager belongings, their hearts fluttering with anticipation of a lucrative sale that might end their financial struggles. Upon reaching Sloughborough, however, they are greeted not by a grand theater, but by a cinema on its last legs, barely held together by a staff as eccentric as they are inept. With a motley crew who seem to have been part of the cinema's furniture since its inception, Jean and Matt embark on a mission to spruce up the cinema and sell it off. But in a world where the script is constantly rewritten, will their plans unfold as they envision? Or will they be drawn into the quirky charm of the smallest show on Earth? Dive into this delightful 1957 classic to find out.
