Plot

Amidst the turbulent aftermath of the Spanish Civil War, the movie "The Sleeping Voice" weaves a poignant tale of two sisters, Hortensia and Pepita, entwined in the clandestine coils of an underground resistance movement. The rustic charm of Cordoba gives way to the tense atmosphere of Madrid as young Pepita leaves her home behind to stand by her sister Hortensia, who, ensnared within the cold prison bars, carries life within her, a stark contrast to her grim surroundings. As Hortensia awaits her impending doom, sentenced to death but momentarily spared for the life burgeoning inside her, Pepita finds herself drawn to Paulino. An unlikely suitor from a well-heeled Valencia family, Paulino is a fellow resistance fighter, battling on the rugged terrain of Madrid's mountains. Despite their lives being shadowed by the upheaval around them, love blossoms passionately between them, an oasis of warmth in a chilling landscape. With the ticking clock of Hortensia's execution hanging like a guillotine, Pepita navigates the labyrinthine bureaucracy and prejudice of the postwar world, desperately seeking clemency for her sister. Her daily pilgrimages to the prison are not only quests for justice but also the hope to cradle Hortensia's child in freedom, to prevent him from becoming another nameless orphan of the times. "The Sleeping Voice" is a poignant exploration of love, resilience, and rebellion against the backdrop of a scarred nation, where personal battles mirror the political strife and every triumph, no matter how small, echoes of defiance.
