Plot

The Sign of the Ram unravels in Bastians, a grand sixteenth-century Spanish edifice perched on the rugged cliffs of the wind-lashed Cornish coast. This is the abode of the St. Aubyns. At the heart of the household is Leah St. Aubyn, a blossoming poet, and the second and much younger wife of Major Mallory St. Aubyn, a dedicated horticulturist who devotes his time to his greenhouse and tending to Leah, now wheelchair-bound after a tragic accident while saving her step-children, Logan and Jane, from a near-death experience. Leah's heroism and endearing persona have endeared her to the St. Aubyn offspring – Logan, Jane, and the impressionable Christine, who adore her as their own mother. Their affection was further solidified when Leah's life-altering accident occurred, two years into her marriage with Mallory. This tragedy has seemingly bestowed a profound contentment onto Leah, who has unflinchingly accepted her wheelchair-bound existence. As the tale unfolds, Logan, a budding law student, and Jane, find themselves on the cusp of their own romantic journeys. Logan's path crosses with the aspiring artist, Catherine Woolton, an orphan with a mysterious background, while Jane finds herself drawn to Leah's physician, Dr. Simon Crowdy. These fledgeling affairs uncover the intricate family dynamics, revealing a side of Leah that only comes to light with the arrival of Sherida Binyon, Leah's new secretary. Underneath Leah's warm exterior lurks a cold, calculating matriarch, who uses her disability as a tool for manipulation. She ruthlessly dismantles Jane's love affair and nearly drives Logan's fiancée to the brink of despair. As her family pieces together the chilling reality of her machinations, Leah's maneuvers become even more devious, and her mental equilibrium begins to falter. The Sign of the Ram is a haunting exploration of power, manipulation, and the darkness that can reside within the most picturesque of homes.
