Plot

In the rolling hills of Ireland, Hanna, a withdrawn deaf woman with a unique fixation on a monotonous diet of white rice, chicken nuggets and apples, leads a solitary life working in a factory. After four years of relentless service, her boss insists she takes a vacation that inadvertently leads her on an unexpected journey of self-discovery and redemption. While dining in a quiet restaurant during her enforced holiday, Hanna's keen hearing aid picks up a desperate phone conversation that piques her curiosity and compassion. She learns of Josef, a courageous oil rig worker, severely burned and temporarily blinded after a heroic act of saving a colleague from a fiery death. Intrigued and moved, Hanna volunteers to nurse the injured Josef on the deserted oil rig, a decommissioned behemoth surrounded by the vast, relentless sea. On the rig, only a handful of workers remain: a cook, an oceanographer, and a few others lost in the enormity of the ocean. In this isolated environment, Hanna begins to break free from her self-imposed silence. As she nurtures Josef back to health, she finds herself slowly connecting with the rig's sparse inhabitants and gradually opens her heart to Josef. As their bond deepens, Hanna is compelled to confront the traumatic past she's been running from, leading her towards an unexpected path of healing and self-forgiveness. "The Secret Life of Words" is a poignant journey into the human heart's capacity for resilience, empathy, and the transformative power of connection amidst isolation. It's about the secrets we keep, the words we're afraid to say, and the courage we find when we dare to break our silence.
