Plot

In the heartland of America's frontier, The Sea of Grass reveals the turbulent tale of a fierce New Mexico cattleman, Col. James B. 'Jim' Brewton (Spencer Tracy), and his headstrong bride, St. Louis native Lutie Cameron (Katharine Hepburn). United by a whirlwind courtship but divided by their convictions, the couple navigates the uncharted terrain of their tumultuous marriage amidst the vast expanses of the New Mexican prairie - a sea of grass that Brewton fiercely defends against encroaching homesteaders. Lutie, finding herself in the rustic wilds of Salt Fork, NM, grapples with her husband's aggressive methods of safeguarding his grazing lands. Brewton, perceived as a tyrant by the locals, is relentless in his pursuit to fend off settlers from the government-owned pastures he utilizes for his cattle. Lutie struggles to reconcile her own values with the harsh realities of her husband's world, creating a rift that echoes across the plains. As the narrative unfolds, Lutie's personal journey takes a dramatic twist. A clandestine affair results in a child, casting her into the unforgiving storm of societal scorn. Simultaneously, the helpless farmers watch as their beloved sea of grass, ruthlessly exploited and without respite, teeters on the brink of becoming a barren dust bowl. The Sea of Grass weaves a compelling and complex tale of love, loyalty, and the relentless struggle for survival in the stark yet beautiful American frontier.
