Plot

In a world of seafaring danger and royal intrigue, Captain Geoffrey Thorpe (Errol Flynn), a gallant privateer known as the Sea Hawk, sails under the banner of Queen Elizabeth I (Dame Flora Robson). His daring exploits are dedicated to keeping England safe and its shipping lanes open, even if it means pirating Spanish galleons. During one audacious raid, he seizes a Spanish ship carrying the ambassador to England, Don José Alvarez de Cordoba (Claude Rains), and his alluring niece, Doña Maria (Brenda Marshall). Struck by her beauty, Thorpe is smitten, but she resists his advances due to his roguish ways, which include purloining her precious jewels. Displaying a surprising nobility, Thorpe returns the gems, beginning to thaw Doña Maria's icy exterior. Upon reaching England, Queen Elizabeth I is incensed by Thorpe's reckless actions and demands that he abandon his piratical activities. Unable to renounce his maritime lifestyle, Thorpe embarks on a covert mission, which leads to his capture by the Spaniards. As a prisoner, he uncovers a damning secret about the impending Spanish Armada. Meanwhile, the distant Doña Maria finds her heart aching for the audacious pirate. When Thorpe executes a daring escape and returns to England, he must unsheathe his sword once more. Exciting duels ensue as he attempts to reveal the Spanish plot and win Doña Maria's heart, all while navigating the treacherous waters of loyalty, love, and betrayal.
