Plot

In the sun-drenched retirement haven of Sun City, Arizona, we find the irascible Lenny Savage, a man grappling with dementia and the recent loss of his long-term partner, Doris Metzger. Amidst his confusion, he leans on his estranged adult children, Jon and Wendy Savage, who are both navigating their own challenges on the opposite side of the country. Jon, a drama professor in chilly Buffalo, finds himself wrestling with a book about Bertold Brecht, while Wendy, a freelancer in vibrant New York, navigates her shaky aspiration of penning theater scripts and a clandestine affair with a married man. Thrust back into their father's life by Doris's death, the Savage siblings must confront the bitter legacy of their upbringing. They find themselves shouldering the burdens of Lenny's care, a responsibility that drags them from their isolated lives and forces them to rekindle their sibling bond. Despite the lingering resentment towards their father's past abuses and the painful distance of two decades, they find themselves compelled to improve his twilight years, even as they continue to wrestle with their personal demons - demons that Lenny himself helped spawn. When the Savage siblings relocate Lenny to a nursing home in Buffalo, they are met with the stark reality of their father's decline and the impact it has on their lives. As they navigate this new terrain, they struggle to reconcile their past and present, grappling with the harsh echoes of an abusive childhood that now reverberate loudly in the face of their father's vulnerability. "The Savages" is an intimate exploration of family dynamics, the cruel march of time, and the resilience of the human spirit amidst life's toughest challenges.
