The Rules of Attraction (2002)

Beneath the gilded veneer of academia at Camden College, a labyrinth of desire, deceit, and self-discovery is unfolding. Here, three deeply troubled students, each grappling with their demons, are entangled in a complexly woven love triangle. Sean Bateman, a notorious drug dealer with a reputation for womanizing, is the younger brother of a morally bankrupt Wall Street broker. He's constantly treading water in a sea of debt owed to Rupert Guest, a fellow dealer. His heart, however, falls into the hands of the virtuous Lauren, a girl he believes is secretly admiring him through anonymous notes. Lauren, while drawn to Sean, is still emotionally tethered to her ex-boyfriend Victor, a shallow charmer gallivanting across Europe for a semester. Despite her yearning for Victor, Lauren is technically a virgin, preserving her innocence for the man she perceives as her great love. Ironically, her roommate Lara, known for her overtly promiscuous behavior, also harbors a burning desire for Victor. Paul Denton, once Lauren's beau, now openly bisexual, finds himself smitten with Sean, mistakenly believing him to be of the same disposition. His affections are further convoluted by his attraction to Mitchell Allen, who is ostentatiously dating Candice to dispel rumors of his homosexuality. In this hedonistic whirlpool, it's a survival of the selfish, where everybody is merely looking out for themselves. Unspoken love, repressed desires, and concealed secrets intertwine, creating a twisted narrative of sex, drugs, and college life. Each character, including the seemingly peripheral Lara and Victor, harbors a deep disturbance, adding layers of complexity to this darkly intriguing tale.
