The Rough, Tough West (1952)

In the gritty heart of a mining town, Steve Holden, alias the Durango Kid (Charles Starrett), makes a startling discovery. His old comrade, Big Jack Mahoney (Jock Mahoney), now operates a saloon and is ruthlessly seizing control of the town's gold mines and claims through illicit means. Draped in unassuming charm, Big Jack mesmerizes the saloon entertainer Carolina (Carolina Cotton), who remains oblivious to his duplicitous dealings. On the other side of the town, Smiley Burnette, the local fire chief, empathizes with the beleaguered miners. His contributions, though limited to soulful songs that often play second fiddle to the rambunctious tunes from Carolina Cotton and Pee Wee King, are his humble attempts to bolster the miners' spirits. When Big Jack monopolizes the sole road leading out of town, he begins to levy tolls on all outbound gold shipments. This unyielding greed prompts Steve to step into the role of the newly-appointed Sheriff. Tandem with Smiley, he guides the miners through a clandestine path to the town. But this route, shrouded in mystery, is not as secret as they had hoped. Big Jack's gunmen are swiftly on their tail, leaving the gold shipments in peril. Meanwhile, Big Jack's chief henchman, Fulton, emerges from the shadows as the root of the escalating conflict.
