Plot

Set in the unforgiving shadows of East Berlin, 1961, just as the infamous Wall rears its divisive head, we plunge into the audacious tale of Konrad, Sophie, and their band of friends who dare to dream of freedom in Western Germany. Their desperate escape is only partially triumphant, leaving Konrad in the clutches of the oppressive East. Over the course of 28 long years, the relentless longing to reunite fuels Sophie and Konrad's spirits, their love story scorned by the impenetrable Iron Curtain. As Konrad ascends the ranks of astrophysics, he masterfully manipulates his newfound prestige, leveraging international science conferences as lifelines to Sophie. Yet, in a society where the omnipresent Stasi hounds every step of those deemed suspicious, including Konrad's sister Barbara and her husband Harald, maintaining a semblance of privacy, sustaining their ideals, and safeguarding their self-respect morphs into a grueling battle. And all the while, the seemingly invincible Eastern block begins to crumble, inch by agonizing inch. "The Promise" is a testament to resilience, a poignant love story set against the backdrop of a country veering on the brink of monumental change.
