Plot

In the bustling city of Adelaide, the intriguing lives of Dr. Brian Cowper, a medical anthropology professor, and his wife Jill, a dedicated anthropology graduate student, take an uncanny turn. Having recently relocated from Melbourne, the couple finds themselves in a period of transition, teetering on the edge of a mature and stable life, dreams of a family, and a house of their own. Amidst these plans, Jill is also striving to focus on her personal research, stepping away from the shadows of academia. Suddenly, Brian's career takes a promising leap when his mentors from the World Health Organization show interest in reviewing his work, potentially leading him to a prestigious position in Geneva. However, this news, while exciting, leaves Jill uncertain. Their lives take a further unexpected twist when the university dispatches Max, a garrulous plumber, to inspect their bathroom's plumbing unannounced. Max's diagnosis reveals a disarray of pipes requiring several hours of work. Yet, there's something peculiar about Max. Jill observes unsettling behavior and a jarring mention of a stint in prison that sends a chill down her spine. Each time she attempts to confront him, he skillfully deflects her suspicions, and what was supposed to be a few hours of repairs turns into a drawn-out ordeal, leaving their bathroom looking like a warzone. Despite her growing apprehensions, Jill's concerns are dismissed by her husband, her friend Meg, and the superintendent's wife, who perceive Max as a harmless, if not quirky, tradesman. However, Jill's instincts refuse to align with their perceptions. As Max's presence and his unnerving antics intensify, Jill finds herself locked in a psychological chess game. With Brian preoccupied with his potential career leap and absent during Max's visits, Jill is left alone to untangle herself from this increasingly oppressive situation. Faced with the daunting task of outwitting Max and freeing herself from his psychological stranglehold, Jill must summon her strength, calling upon her intellect and resolve. The Plumber is a chilling exploration of the everyday turned sinister, the power of intuition, and the struggle of a woman to regain control of her life.
