Annie Grayson, a Californian woman steered by her scheming boyfriend Brent Richter, meticulously orchestrates the murder of her husband Martin. They employ a lethal dose of potassium chloride, resulting in a fatal heart attack that secures a hefty $250,000 insurance payout. However, their ill-fated partnership deteriorates when Brent selfishly squanders the insurance money and is caught committing infidelity.
Four years later, Annie, now under the alias Marianne Brown, has left her past life behind, migrating from California to Philadelphia. She marries Richard Danforth, a junior partner in a family development business owned by his influential father, Donald Danforth. Despite Marianne's newfound public status, her past comes knocking when Brent locates her. He persuades her to renew their deadly alliance, plotting to eliminate Richard.
With a mind of her own, Marianne infuses the plan with her own cunning ideas. Some she shares with Brent, others she keeps secret.
