In the grimy underbelly of deception and betrayal, Jo Lake and Mark Davies craft a perilous living out of the "outraged husband" scam. However, they cross paths with the menacing Kleinie, prompting Jo's desperate wish to abandon their dangerous game. Mark, however, convinces her to ensnare one final prey before they retire.
In a haze of alcohol and victory, young student Tom becomes Jo's last mark after a winning streak at a local club. He drunkenly follows her back to her flat, oblivious to the lurking danger. Meanwhile, Mark awaits their arrival but is met instead by the monstrous Kleinie, who ruthlessly stabs him and leaves his lifeless body in Jo's bedroom.
Upon Jo's return with Tom, a chilling phone call from Kleinie unveils the gruesome scene in her bedroom. Fearful and manipulative, Jo convinces Tom that he will be the prime suspect and sways him to dispose of the body.
As Tom drunkenly veers through the city streets, his erratic driving attracts police attention, leading to his frantic escape. The news of a body found in his car and the manhunt for him reach his friends, Glynn and Roy, who rush to inform his unsuspecting fiancée, Mary.
In the meanwhile, Jo abandons her haunted apartment, leaving a trail that leads Tom and his friends to King's Cross Station. However, the club barman tips off Kleinie about their whereabouts. Just as they find Jo, the police arrive, leading to a chaotic escape into the streets where they're ambushed and taken captive by Kleinie.
"The Painted Smile" thus weaves a tale of deception, desperation, and survival in a world where trust is as elusive as the painted smile on a charlatan's face.
