Plot

In the heart of suburban West Orange, New Jersey, two families, the Wallings and the Ostroffs, have intertwined their lives across the picket fences. David Walling and Terry Ostroff, inseparable friends, share morning runs and the illusion of perfect marriages. David, however, seeks refuge from his wife Paige's ceaseless projects in his office-turned-sanctuary, while Terry's wife Cathy feigns interest in his ramblings and gadget obsessions. The two families share a trio of grown-up offspring. The Walling's daughter, Vanessa, a design school graduate, is struggling to launch her career while resenting the Ostroff's daughter and erstwhile friend, Nina, who she deems as self-centered. Nina, a globetrotting free spirit, has escaped the clutches of her controlling mother, leaving home five years ago and currently residing in San Francisco, engaged to an artist named Ethan. The Walling's son, Toby, is preparing for an assignment in China, much to the delight of Cathy, who dreams of a union between him and her daughter. The tranquility of their seemingly idyllic lives is disrupted when Nina returns home for Thanksgiving, freshly heartbroken over her cheating fiancé. Cathy sees an opportunity to rekindle Nina's relationship with Toby, but an unexpected romance blossoms instead, sending shockwaves through both families. This clandestine affair forces each member to confront their suppressed unhappiness, challenging their perceptions of love, happiness, and the confines of societal norms. The Oranges is a compelling exploration of the complex dynamics of family and friendship, exposing the frailty of the veneer of suburban perfection and the profound impact of unexpected love.
