The Motive (2017)

In the sun-drenched landscapes of southern Spain, Sevilla is home to a man named Álvaro. Unremarkable and clumsy, he is stuck in the humdrum life of an accountant in a notary office. His wife, Amanda, suddenly attains fame with her debut novel, sparking envy and a burning desire within Álvaro to craft the ultimate literary masterpiece that will outshine Amanda's sudden success. In pursuit of his dream, he enrolls in a nighttime literature class, seeking guidance from his teacher José to unlock the secrets of crafting an unforgettable narrative. However, Álvaro's world shatters when he discovers Amanda's adulterous affair, which prompts his boss, Don Alfonso, to suggest a much-needed vacation for him. Relocating to a new apartment, Álvaro devotes his days and nights to writing, his obsession growing with each unsuccessful attempt. He soon becomes acquainted with his new neighbors - Enrique and Irene, two Mexican immigrants struggling financially; Sr. Montero, an ex-military man with extreme right-wing ideologies, and the building's caretaker, a discontented mature woman who becomes Álvaro's unwitting source of information. Álvaro's desperation to write the perfect novel leads him down a treacherous path of manipulation. He fabricates a web of lies around Enrique, promising him a way to reclaim his job, all while secretly plotting to provoke Enrique into murdering Sr. Montero for his hidden wealth. However, Álvaro's limited imagination soon spirals out of control, blurring the line between his fictional world and reality. As his dream of creating the perfect novel hangs in the balance, Álvaro is left grappling with the unforeseen consequences of his actions.
